It all starts with a business idea…

We’ve all got to start somewhere… A business idea…

Have you ever got to work, sat at your desk, and thought ‘What am I doing here?’

That’s what happened to me in 2015. I switched my computer on, logged into Hootsuite and thought ‘Why am I only getting paid to do one company’s social media? I could be doing this for lots of companies, for myself.

Be my own boss…

Where to begin?

That’s exactly where a business idea starts. A thought. It’s whether or not you have the confidence to put your all into that thought to make it become reality. You also have to weigh up the pros and cons, and if that still doesn’t put you off, then what are you waiting for?

There’s the risk of failing, but in what part of life isn’t there that risk? There’s also the risk that you’re going to become massively successful. and that one little idea has been the answer to all of your problems. It’s having the confidence in yourself that then turns into belief. Everything happens for a reason, and a failure isn’t failing, see it as a lesson of what not to do next time.

Ask yourself…

If you want to start your own business but you’re struggling at the first hurdle because you don’t know what your business should do!? Ask yourself this: ‘What do you enjoy doing?’

We spend far too much time in our lives working, so why waste that time doing something you don’t enjoy? Think about what gets you excited, what gives you that warm fuzzy feeling in your gut. What puts a smile on your face? Get a pen and paper, take a deep breath and just make a list. You’ll be surprised at how much your intuition will get involved, and something will certainly pop into your head.

Marketing is a huge passion of mine; it comes naturally so it was a no brainer when it came to me knowing what I wanted to do. I knew this before I thought about doing my own business. Having no degree back then, but having the experience, unfortunately, didn’t pass for much. But, as time has gone on, and I’ve kept plugging away, things have got easier.

As you know, some of the most successful people in the world (e.g. Richard Branson) don’t have degrees and he has one of the best quotes I’ve heard; “If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity but you are not sure you can do it, say yes – then learn how to do it later!” This is exactly what I did. But don’t let it phase you, it hasn’t me…

Step 1 of your business idea:

As I said above, think about what you’re good at. What you would love to do and earn money doing for the next 10-50 years (dependent on age, it’s never too late or early!)

One of the main sayings I go by is ‘It’s not what you know, it’s who you know.’ I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for the people who helped me get here. I’ve been lucky to have been given opportunities (in marketing and other areas); and once I’d got there they’ve believed and invested in me. It’s paid off. I’ll always be eternally grateful to those that saw I had the passion in me to want to do well within digital marketing. Just because you don’t have the degree to “prove” you can do it; doesn’t mean you shouldn’t go for it anyway. If anything it should make you more determined. And, if you don’t have that drive in the first place then starting up your own business isn’t for you… It isn’t a piece of cake.

If you want to brain storm or have a chat, get in touch; or just keep your eyes peeled for step 2… To be continued…
